Bamboo therapy is one of the most demanded massage techniques or alternative therapies in the most innovative beauty and aesthetic centres. If you want to know what it is and the benefits it has, keep reading this blog so you don’t miss a single detail!

What is Bamboo therapy?

Bamboo therapy is a type of aesthetic treatment in which bamboo canes of different sizes are used as a tool. Pressure is applied to different parts of the body and different therapeutic and aesthetic benefits are obtained.

During the massage the body releases oxytocin, serotonin and endorphin, which results in relief of pain, tension and a feeling of relaxation.

Benefits of bamboo therapy

The benefits of bamboo cane massage are many and here are some of them:

  • Improves blood circulation and lymphatic drainage.
  • Relaxes the nervous system.
  • Eliminates muscle tension.
  • Combats localised fat (legs, abdomen and waist) and firms the skin.
  • Improves the appearance of cellulite and reshapes the silhouette.
  • Eliminates toxins.
  • Calms stress and fatigue.
  • Tones all parts of the body.
  • Gives a feeling of general well-being.
  • Improves skin elasticity.
  • Reduces flaccidity and expression lines.

This massage with bamboo canes is ideal for promoting emotional balance, unblocking any disorder that impedes the flow of energy and makes it difficult for us to be in complete harmony. It is also an invigorating, relaxing and perfect treatment for contractures.

Origin of bamboo therapy

Bamboo therapy originated in Japan, although this oriental technique is practised in other similar cultures in Asia. In Eastern countries it is believed that bamboo purifies negative energies, calms the mind and balances the body’s energy.

In Eastern culture bamboo has been given magical properties since ancient times. They believe that positive energies flow through the body and balance the energy centres, the chakras, and allow one to be in balance and harmony.

Types of bamboo

Bamboo rods of various sizes are used in bamboo therapy to access different parts of the body. These rods should be applied to the body gently and firmly. There are different bamboo kits but the most common are the following:

  • Small bamboo or small bamboo canes are used for the abdomen, they are slid over the belly to relax it.
  • Thick bamboo is used for massage on the dorsal area and slides from the heels to the shoulders.
  • Bamboo sticks are used for the skull and facial area.

Bamboo sticks should be sanded, varnished and should have an even surface because they glide better.

Bamboo therapy steps

The treatment with bamboo canes is a therapeutic and relaxing massage, it provides a deep relaxation of the muscles and works on tension points, this is achieved with intense pressure and slow movements but if the movements are faster and more intense it has the effect of a modelling massage.

The bamboo cane massage consists of the following steps:

  • The skin is exfoliated to remove dead skin cells. Here, for example, a body scrub containing some kind of oil can be used.
  • Different types of oils are applied to the skin, either soothing or complementary oils. In the area of the buttocks, legs and waist, for example, a firming and slimming anti-cellulite can be applied.
  • The bamboo canes are slid over the whole body. This reactivates the circulation, draining and regenerating the body’s tissues by exerting pressure by sliding and rolling. Always moving from bottom to top (feet, lower limbs, back, upper limbs and hands) and ending with a head massage.
  • The massage is finished by covering the body with warm towels to achieve total relaxation. Before this step, the body could be moisturised with a moisturising or nourishing body cream.

The duration of a bamboo therapy session is approximately 1 hour and to see results you will need about 10 sessions. But don’t forget to have a balanced diet, exercise and drink plenty of water!

Contraindications of bamboo therapy

The contraindications for bamboo therapy are usually the same as for lymphatic drainage, shaping massages or relaxing massages. This massage is not recommended for people suffering from diabetes, fever, infections, thrombosis or cancer. If in doubt, please ask a doctor or professional therapist.
