What is the curly method?

Here we’re going to tell you what this method is all about and everything you need to know about this trend that is causing such a sensation.

The curly method is a specific hair care routine for curly hair. This hair care routine can actually be adapted to straight hair even though it was initially created for curly or wavy hair, the aim is to achieve healthy hair.

The aim of this method is to achieve elastic, voluminous, natural curls free of frizz. Let us show you the steps to achieve “wow” looking hair.

How does the curly method work?

The curly method or curly girl method is based on moisturising the hair and respecting it naturally. It is advisable to treat it when it it’s wet and it’s not advisable to brush it dry.

The hair can be styled and detangled by hand or with a wide bristle comb.

Origin of the curly method, who developed this method?

The curly method was developed by a curly hair guru or hair care expert called Lorraine Massey who established this method in her book “Curly Girl The Handbook”. She recommends following the curly method for at least 3 weeks.

Curl types

As you may already know, curly hair tends to be dry, so you should avoid drying it out by avoiding ingredients such as drying alcohols, sulphates, silicones, phthalates, parabens, mineral oils and waxes. These cause dryness by stripping the scalp of its natural oils. Here are some sulphates to avoid in your curly shampoo because you’ll end up with dry hair:

  • Sodium Laureth Sulfate
  • Sodium Lauryl Sulfate
  • Ammonium Laureth Sulfate
  • Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate

Some solid shampoos use Sodium Coco Sulfate but we recommend not to use it. Avoid frizz and get defined, elastic curls!

On the other hand, if you abuse hair dyes, hair dryers and straighteners you can end up with damaged hair. If you use shampoos with silicones to fix this, you should be aware that it builds up in your hair and you will have to resort to shampoos with sulphates again. This can lead to dandruff or dull hair, so we do not recommend the use of non-water soluble silicones.

The only time you need to use a sulphate shampoo is when starting this method, this is to cleanse your hair of any residue that may be left in it.

If you want to avoid weakening the hair fibre, use a moisturising or reconstructing hair mask, let your hair air dry and when it’s cold and you want to blow dry your hair always use a hair diffuser. The curly hair method discourages the use of a hair dryer or straightener.

Steps of the curly method

  1. Washing the hair
  2. Moisturising
  3. Enhancing and defining the curl

Moisturising hair masks can be used weekly or fortnightly. It is also recommended that they are used before shampooing, dry so that they do not stretch the curl, weigh down the hair and enhance their effect.

If after using styling creams or gels, you need more texture and definition in your curls, use some kind of setting spray.

Dictionary of the curly method

Co-washing or co-washing washing routine

In this method you usually wash your hair with a hair conditioner but if you find that continued use does not clean your hair well and builds up product, then buy a shampoo that is suitable for the curly method. If you prefer to use a hair conditioner, make sure it is formulated with surfactants that moisturise and cleanse at the same time.

Leave in curly or no-rinse method

Leave in is a leave-in conditioner that does not need to be rinsed out, it retains moisture in the hair before applying the curl definer. A nourishing oil or hair serum can be applied from mid-lengths to ends to avoid greasing the roots.

Low poo products

These products are shampoos that do not contain sulphates or silicones in their formulation.
