Gua Sha is a type of ancient massage from China that is used to obtain an immediate lifting effect and that everyone is adding to their facial routine including influencers and beauty addicts. If you want to know more about this famous massage, we encourage you to keep reading this blog!
Gua Sha is an ancient type of massage in which a type of jade or rose quartz stone with a unique heart shape is used. It can be used for facial or body massage but the former is the most commonly used. It can also be considered as a facial ritual using the principles of acupuncture or a holistic and natural method of wellness and beauty.
Gua Sha is a non-invasive treatment and is a Skin Gym technique. Some know this technique as the “scraping” technique, which is widely used in aesthetic and therapeutic treatments.
Gua Sha has a tightening action on the muscles of the skin and strengthens it, activates circulation, blood flow, releases toxins, restores radiance to the skin, helps to drain and detoxify, reduces the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines, reduces bags around the eyes, dark circles under the eyes as well as sagging or double chin. It also makes creams and serums penetrate the skin better and makes them more effective.
The result of the Gua Sha is skin rejuvenation, it is used as an anti-ageing treatment to fade small wrinkles in the daily beauty routine but it also helps to relax the tension of the facial muscles, bringing wellness and relaxation. It is often used in conjunction with a beauty facial roller, jade roller or rose quartz roller for added benefits by activating circulation and smoothing wrinkles.
When Gua Sha is used in body treatments, it stimulates and remodels. It is often used to treat cellulite, drainage and to eliminate daily stress because it oxygenates the tissues and activates blood circulation.
Gua Sha is recommended for use after removing make-up and after cleansing and moisturising the face. The pressure on the face should be moderate and should not be used on areas where there are cuts, ulcers, wounds, bumps, moles or if you have coagulation problems.
Here we explain the basic movements with the Gua Sha so that the active ingredients of your cosmetic beauty products penetrate into the skin. They should be performed on clean skin for 3 to 5 minutes a day:
1. Toning of the neck
The stone is slid in a downward motion from top to bottom and from outside to inside on the heart-shaped side. It is done 3 times over each area and pressed harder at the bottom.
2. Facial contouring
Start at the chin area, pressing up to the top of the ear, 3 times on each side and pressing harder at the end of each movement.
3. Strengthening cheekbones
On the heart-shaped side, massage from the nose outwards under the eyes, 3 times and press down at the end as explained above.
4. Marionette lines
Rub the stone on the convex side from the outside of the lip to the end of the eyebrow in a diagonal motion. Again, do this 3 times on each side.
5. Eye contour
With the heart-shaped side, follow the eyebrow line and end at the temple in an upward motion. Repeat 3 times on each side.
6. Forehead and frown line
Press the area between the eyebrows and go up to the hairline with the convex part of the stone, from the inside to the outside, 3 times each movement.
Gua Sha can also be duck foot, fish or rectangular shaped. In regards to the material, as mentioned above it can be made of rose quartz or jade.
