Non-toxic cosmetics is more important than you might think because everyone uses some type of cosmetic throughout the day or is at least exposed to some. Our skin is the largest organ in the body and approximately 65% of any product you apply to it will be absorbed into your bloodstream.
Surely you have heard of products that are free of parabens, silicones, phthalates, synthetic fragrances, sulfates and petrochemicals. But do you know what they are and what effect they have on our bodies?
If you want to know more, we encourage you to read this blog!
What are parabens?
Synthetic parabens are used as preservatives in cosmetic products and can be found in gels, toothpastes, make-up, moisturisers, hair care products, etc… to prevent the product from producing fungi, microorganisms or bacteria.
More than 80% of conventional cosmetics use them due to their low price. Parabens are approved by the European health authorities but this does not prevent more and more allergic reactions of various kinds such as redness, itching, rosacea, skin inflammation and feelings of dryness and tightness.
What is silicone?
Silicone is a chemically synthesized polymer, it is not toxic but it is a substance that neither hair nor skin can absorb, so it accumulates in the epidermis. This means that it can cause pores to become clogged and the skin to age if it is not removed with good cleaning.
In addition, we must remember that although it has an immediate effect on wrinkles and hair, it is only at a superficial level and not in depth.
What are phthalates?
Phthalates and plasticisers are a class of chemicals that are added to cosmetics to improve their flexibility and longevity. They have been linked to hormonal, reproductive, fertility and child development problems.
They are often used in the cosmetic industry to increase the flexibility and hardness of different materials such as nail polish. They are also often used to fix aromas in creams and perfumes.
Always make sure that your cosmetic products are free of DEP (diethyl phthalate), DMP (dimethyl phthalate) and DBP (dibutyl phthalate).
What about fragrances or perfumes?
Fragrances can combine hundreds of synthetic chemicals. In addition, they are the cause of skin and allergic reactions.
Also, don’t be fooled by “unscented” products because they can contain chemicals that mask the smell of other chemicals.
Some fragrances contain synthetic musks that affect the endocrine system.
What are sulphates?
They are synthetic products, it is a very aggressive chemical and allergen because it can cause irritation to the scalp. It is usually used in shampoos because they generate foam and clean deeply.
What are petrochemicals?
They are the petroleum derivatives that contaminate, are not biodegradable and generate solid and harmful waste for the human body and our planet.
Most conventional hygiene and beauty products for daily use contain chemicals with allergens, endocrine disruptors, irritating and carcinogenic chemicals that penetrate our bodies and over time lead to disease.
It is possible to eliminate from our body these toxins (metylparabens, propylparabens, triclosan, benzophenone…) that we accumulate when using conventional cosmetics if we start using natural and organic products.
