Tigernut is increasingly more used in cosmetics. It is a tuber the size of a wrinkled bean, of approximately 2 cm long. It is considered as a superfood that helps us both inside and outside our body.
Already in ancient Egypt they used their oil for skin and hair care. The Byzantine Romans also used it and attributed important healing and regenerative properties to it. If you want to learn a little more about the tigernut in cosmetics and its precious oil, we encourage you to keep reading this blog!
It is an innovative oil that provides intense hydration of the skin, protecting it from external aggressions. It has a high content of oleic acid, magnesium, tocopherols and vitamins. It has multiple benefits and also contains biotin (also known as vitamin 7, vitamin 8 or vitamin H).
It is obtained by cold pressing the tuber and no chemical process is used in its extraction, which guarantees that the oil maintains its properties, vitamins and minerals.
Tigernuts oil nourishes, softens, provides elasticity and helps to maintain fantastic skin hydration, which is why it is highly recommended for dry skin and to prevent skin infections. It is also recommended for sensitive skin with a tendency to flaking (eczema, psoriasis, etc.) as it contains active healing ingredients.
This oil has a higher oxidative stability than the rest of the oils due to the content of polyunsaturated fatty acids and gamma-tocopherol. In addition, its high content of vitamin E (alpha and gamma-tocopherol) prevents premature aging of the skin.
Pure tigernut oil is usually used after depilation (of legs, eyebrows, upper lip, etc.) directly on the skin to eliminate redness, pimples, itching and also prevents and reduces hair growth. It can also be used as a natural ingredient in deodorant.
Tiger nut oil nourishes, repairs and protects the scalp and hair. It moisturises and revitalises damaged, dry or damaged hair. The hair will look soft, silky and shiny.
Tigernut oil is used as a natural ingredient in hand creams, shower gels, moisturizers, anti-aging creams, micellar water, body moisturizers, anti-cellulite gels, serums and lip balms.
In the hand cream it prevents dehydration of the skin, the appearance of cracks and dryness because it is a great skin regenerator and has reaffirming and moisturising power. In shower gels it also prevents dehydration of the skin if used regularly as it contains vitamin A, vitamin E and a high content of oleic acid.
It is used in the anti-ageing cream because it has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. At Mediterranean Spirit we use tiger nut oil in our moisturising anti-ageing face cream. In the INCI (product ingredients) you can find it under the name of Cyperus Esculentus Root Oil.
In Spain, organic tigernut and tigernuts are grown in the area of the Valencia Community and have the Valencia Tigernut Designation of Origin. The tigernut milk or Horchata is the best known product in Spain and it is a sweet refreshing drink that is mainly consumed in summer although flour, oil or organic cosmetics are also made with this wonderful and unique tuber.
